Our Approach

Our approach to therapy is multi-faceted and can be tailored to meet your individual needs. That being said, our counselling approach is based on a number of values and assumptions.

  • Safety is paramount in counselling and we will do our best to create a safe environment in order for you to have the greatest chance at growth and healing.

  • Sessions are client-driven. That means that you are in charge of your own healing in every step of the process. You have the right to refuse any suggestion, step or process. You will always have to right to ask questions about any aspect of the counselling relationship, including Inner Haven Counselling's policies.

  • We maintain a holistic perspective, knowing that all aspects of life contribute to mental health and well-being, and that mental health also affects all other aspects of life.

  • Being trained in transpersonal counselling means we consider you to be part of a greater system and that there is always context to your challenges. We are completely comfortable with spiritual topics, but it is not a requirement that you subscribe to any specific spiritual belief system in order to engage in counselling with us.

Specialty Areas

At Inner Haven Counselling, we are happy to work with anyone who feels that we are a good fit for them. However, we also offer specialized counselling in the following areas (click on the links to learn more):

Types of Therapy

Our sessions are flexible and fluid and incorporate elements of many different kinds of therapy. Here are just some of the types of therapy we may bring to a session.

Internal Family Systems® (IFS)

This evidence-based and transformational psychotherapy is based on the idea that we all have a mind that is made up of parts that take on various roles, as well as a core Self which contains everything we need to heal. The goal of IFS therapy is learn about our parts, and help those parts to shift and heal so that the Self is able to lead us. This allows us to spontaneously become more calm, confident, creative and connected.

Family Systems Therapy

In individual therapy, family systems therapy simply means that we approach problem-solving through the lens of the relationships, patterns and dynamics of our families. By exploring the families that we are connected with, we can learn a lot about ourselves and learn to bring compassion to our experiences.

Somatic Therapy

The body and mind are inseparable and our experiences often become imprinted in our bodies. Somatic therapy can take many different forms including exploring how our emotions feel in our body, exploring physical issues that may have emotional influences, and using breathwork or other techniques to learn to calm the nervous system. We are innately physical beings and somatic therapy can help us heal and deepen our experience of life.

Transpersonal Therapy

We already talked about transpersonal counselling in talking about our general approach, but it deserves a little more explanation. There are many different definitions for transpersonal psychology so it is important to be aware of Inner Haven Counselling's specific use of this therapy. An individual's belief about their purpose and place in the environment can affect their mental health. No matter what religious or spiritual background we come from, we can use the therapeutic process to explore our spiritual beliefs and the effects they may have on our lives. We will ask certain questions around spirituality to understand your beliefs, and we will keep those in mind throughout therapy. Your level of comfort with and interest in the topic will determine how much of a part it will play in your sessions.
